How drivetrain compatibility works

The common upgrade mistake is looking only at speed count. In practice, chain profile, freehub standard, shifter pull ratio and frame requirements decide whether a drivetrain works.

SRAM Eagle vs Transmission T-Type

Classic Eagle and Eagle Transmission are not one interchangeable system. Transmission uses a T-Type cassette, T-Type chain and a derailleur mounted directly to a UDH frame. AXS controllers are the exception: they can operate different AXS derailleurs.

Shimano LINKGLIDE vs HYPERGLIDE

LINKGLIDE is built for durability, especially on e-bikes and utility bikes. CN-LG500 works with 10/11-speed LINKGLIDE and Shimano 11-speed HYPERGLIDE, but that rule does not extend to 12-speed HG+.

GRX 12-speed: 11-36, 10-45 and 10-51

GRX 2x12 uses HG 11-34/36 cassettes and RD-RX820. GRX 1x12 uses RD-RX822: GS is for 10-45T and SGS is for 10-51T Shimano MTB cassettes on Micro Spline.

Freehub: HG, Micro Spline, XD and XDR

A 10T small sprocket usually means standard Shimano HG is not enough. Shimano 12-speed MTB uses Micro Spline, SRAM Eagle uses XD, and SRAM road/XPLR AXS uses XDR.

Drivetrain compatibility FAQ

Does SRAM Transmission work with classic Eagle?

Not as a complete mechanical drivetrain. Transmission cassette and chain are T-Type and require T-Type components plus a UDH frame for the derailleur. AXS controllers are the exception: they can operate different AXS derailleurs.

Is CN-LG500 only for LINKGLIDE?

No. Shimano lists CN-LG500 as compatible with 10/11-speed LINKGLIDE and 11-speed HYPERGLIDE. Do not extend that rule to 12-speed HG+.

Does Shimano 105 12-speed exist as mechanical?

Yes. Shimano 105 R7100 has the mechanical RD-R7100 rear derailleur and ST-R7120 2x12 dual-control levers. It is separate from 105 Di2 RD-R7150/ST-R7170.

Does Micro Spline fit on SRAM XD?

No. Micro Spline and XD use different driver shapes. If your hub supports replaceable drivers, buy the matching body for that exact hub.
